Background & experience
Brian enjoys over sixty years’ experience as a commercial lawyer, specialising in the fields of IP and media. He advises UK and international clients, both corporate and personal, in the fields of theatre, film, television, publishing, music and sports. A veteran of the media industry, his expertise includes advice in relation to financing, production, distribution, franchising and merchandising as well as upon digital and internet issues and data protection. He is an experienced mediator and arbitrator and sits on several panels including those of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, the Law Society and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Brian also provides advice on probate matters and has many years’ experience in handling a range of probate cases both straightforward and complex.
Over the many years of his practice he has represented top talent across many fields including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Sir Georg Solti, The Stranglers, Chas and Dave, Bruce Forsyth, Dick Emery, top selling authors, screenwriters and musicians, a world champion F1 driver, a title winning boxer and corporate media and sports entities including Peter Schaufuss Balletten, Lord Lew Grade, The Old Vic , Rugby World Cup, the IRB, a major international publishing company etc and a plethora of films, TV programmes and series.
Brian advised upon and did all the legal work relating to the transfer of the hit musical ‘Chicago’ from Broadway to the West End where it ran for 14 years and he also dealt with its touring productions. He was instructed in relation to the West End musicals of ‘The Commitments’, ‘Sunset Boulevard’ starring Glenn Close and “Only Fools and Horses”. He has recently concluded the contractual work for a production of a musical spectacular of “Gone with the Wind” in China. He is currently working on a potential transfer to the West End of the play ‘The Guinea Pig Club’ from York Theatre Royal and a parody in France of ‘Gone with the Wind’, as well as a diverse number of matters including the film “Silver Ghost” being co-produced by Anthony Haas and Martin Scorsese, licence agreements for the merchandising of famous international marks and brands and agreements for several television series and theatrical presentations for international authors and playwrights.
Brian is a founder trustee/director of The Ralph and Meriel Richardson Foundation and The Solti Foundation and is a voting member of BAFTA.
